AUTISM IN THE NEWSNew Data Reports one in 88 Children Born in US have AutismMarch 29, 2012 In the United States, the number of children diagnosed with autism, or an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), continues to rise annually. According to a new report issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it is estimated that one in 88 children born in the U.S. has some form of ASD, marking a 78 percent increase in autism diagnosis since 2002. According to the CDC report, boys continue to outnumber girls in ASD diagnosis by a rate of five to one, meaning that andestimated one out of every 54 American boys will be diagnosed with autism. President of advocacy group Autism Speaks Mark Roithmayer believes that autism is an epidemic in the U.S. The reasons surrounding the increased autism diagnosis in the U.S., according to Mr. Roithmayer, are due to "broader diagnosis, better awareness and roughly 50 percent of 'We don't know.’” Early diagnosis with autism leads to early intervention, which is known to improve outcomes for autistic children. "The earlier kids are detected, the earlier they could get services, and the less impairment they'll have on their learning and in their lives on a long-term basis," said CDC Director Dr. Thomas. As doctors continue to get better at diagnosing autism, communities are improving their autism services, both of which are contributing factors to improving the lives of a growing number of children and families affected by autism.
